Trips You Must Go Near San Francisco – Napa Valley

On the second day of our San Francisco trip, we rented a convertible and set off for Napa Valley, America’s famed wine region. The drive through the scenic vineyards was a joy, and upon arriving, we were greeted by a delightful climate. Surrounded by mountains and with a temperature slightly higher than San Francisco, Napa Valley in the fall is a dream. Clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and the sweet aroma of ripe grapes filled the air. It’s no wonder we’re already contemplating this area as a potential retirement destination!

Our destination for the day was Castello di Amorosa, an Italian castle winery where we had a reservation for a wine tasting. After checking into the Hotel Indigo and dropping off our luggage, we headed straight to the winery.

The castle’s owner, an Italian, imported every brick from Europe. Despite the centuries-old bricks, the castle itself is surprisingly new and impeccably maintained 😂. Our tour guide led us through the impressive eight-story structure, which boasts over 100 rooms, including four levels of underground wine cellars. Many of the small rooms are modeled after old European prison cells, except they hold wine inside instead.

The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the wine tasting! We toured the underground wine cellar, and to give visitors a taste of a winemaker’s work, the guide drew some new wine from the barrels for us to taste. I’m not very knowledgeable about wine, but even I could tell the difference in the new wine—it tasted lighter and thinner, not yet fully infused with the oak flavor.

Following the cellar tour, we dove into the main wine tasting experience. Each of us had a wine list and the option to purchase chocolate when making our reservation. The guide brought out more than ten different wines, divided into three categories: the first was champagne and aperitifs, the second was white wine, and the last was red wine. We learned two things: 1. The most expensive wine isn’t necessarily the best-tasting one 😁; 2. Even though we don’t know much about wine tasting, we could still tell which wines we liked the most.


Overall, the wine tasting experience was both comfortable and delightful. It was a rare treat to sample so many wines in one go. The grape juice at this winery also stood out—naturally sweet with a hint of French oak and no additives.

After leaving the winery, we found that most local restaurants close around 8 PM, leaving only fast food options and a home-style restaurant. We chose the busiest spot, only to find it was not only expensive but also quite disappointing. My advice: Bring some snacks with you because you will get hungry after enjoying the great selection of wines.

Miami Beach and Key West 2 Days Trip

During the two-day Thanksgiving holiday, we embarked on an intensive two-day trip to Miami. From Philadelphia to Miami = from winter coats to short sleeves, we achieved a seasonal leap and once again returned to summer 😎.

We landed punctually a little after 11 PM, took a taxi for about 20 minutes to reach the hotel on Miami Beach. After freshening up, we went straight to bed and ‘collapsed’ because of exhaustion. The next morning, we woke up early (set the alarm for 7 AM), climbed out of bed, and opened the balcony door to be greeted by the rising sun over the sea. Perhaps the sun, like me, hadn’t fully woken up and stayed hidden behind the clouds for a while.


The itinerary for the first day was a road trip to Key West, the southernmost point of the United States. The drive took three hours, passing through numerous gas stations and convenience stores. This three-hour journey was a crucial part of the trip, mostly consisting of one-way roads and bridges connecting several islands. It is a highway built over the sea, resembling a drive on the endless ocean. It’s an experience worth going through.

Upon reaching our destination, the first thing on our agenda was to find some food. In Key West, it seemed like there was no need to make reservations in advance for a restaurant. We casually chose a highly-rated small eatery by the seaside and were pleasantly surprised to have extremely fresh oysters and the claws of stone crabs. In Florida, it is illegal to harvest whole stone crabs, so fishermen remove the claws and release the crabs since the claws can grow back. The crab claws we had by the seaside were clearly cooked, yet their texture was incredibly tender and smooth. Speaking of prices, three crab claws cost $34 😑. I randomly ordered a fish sandwich, made with locally caught fish of the day, pan-fried without too many seasonings. It was simple yet delicious, melting in the mouth.


After our meal, we visited the Ernest Hemingway Home, conveniently crossing through the town of Key West: bars, music, Cuban coffee-flavored ice cream, fresh coconut water, light-colored houses, coconut trees 🌴, and the faint scent of sea air. At Hemingway’s residence, we gained a brief understanding of his life and even indulged in a bit of cat spotting. There’s a polydactyl cat – can you find it?


Arriving in Key West, a must-visit recommendation is DJ’s Crab Shack, where you can enjoy affordable, fresh, and delicious lobster rolls:


There are so many details to explore in Key West, and it feels like there’s never enough space to write about it all. Watching the sea and sunset with loved ones, witnessing street performances at the seaside pier, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

Returning to the hotel at night, after freshening up, we ‘collapsed’ again, this time due to fatigue.

The next day, we slept in, had breakfast at the hotel – worth mentioning that the hotel’s buffet breakfast was really good, although we felt a bit nervous with a group of birds eyeing our food.


After checking out, we headed to the beach, and it started raining right after we finished playing in the water 😂. The weather on Miami Beach can be quite unpredictable – one moment you’re sweating under the hot sun, and the next moment there’s a torrential downpour. We found a branch of the gym we use in Miami, spent some time in the sauna, and took a hot shower. Later, we went to a highly-rated Cuban restaurant near the airport. The pineapple fried rice was delicious, and the coconut milkshake was so good that we ordered an extra one to take with us before leaving 😂. We enjoyed them on the way to the airport.

Things to Do on a Trip to San Francisco: Part 1

In this journey, I will be sharing the most fun we had on the first day we arrived in San Francisco and making the most of your time at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco.

In October 2022, we set out for the airport before sunrise to catch the earliest flight available without breakfast. After enduring a 6+ hour flight, we at last touched down at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The local time is twelve, which means it has already turned 3 PM in our original time zone where we departed. Our grumbling stomachs left us with no choice but to plot our first destination even as we waited in the boarding queue. That’s how we found this satisfying meal in Japan Town, San Francisco.

1st Stop: DaeHo Korean BBQ & Beef Soup

This restaurant specializes in braised beef, and their most popular dish is the sizzling hotpot with braised beef ribs and spicy stir-fried rice cakes, known as ‘Braised Beef Ribs.’ It’s generously topped with thick cheese, and once it arrives at your table, you will see the staff bring the torch lighter to melt the cheese and turn it into a beautiful golden and crispy exterior. The melted cheese on top of the dish really provided the creamy richness with the savory and slightly spicy flavors of the braised beef ribs. Their beef noodle soup is also worth trying; the broth is delicious and refreshing leaving us craving for more delicious food. I won’t go into detail about the rest, but as our first stop, I was fortunate that we didn’t disappoint and were able to enjoy such a delicious lunch!

After savoring our delicious lunch, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through Japan Town in the hopes of discovering more delightful culinary treasures. It was very interesting seeing someone dressed in costume cosplaying their favorite anime characters. And finally one ice cream shop immediately caught our eyes. The shop is called ‘舞姬’ (Maiko) ice cream and coffee shop. They offer ice cream cones wrapped in edible gold named ‘Shogun,’ which certainly intrigued our curiosity. However, given my post-lunch preference for something lighter after indulging in cheese and meat, and despite the temptation of the gold ice cream, I chose the matcha flavor, and it proved to be an absolutely delightful choice.

2. Fisherman’s Wharf

Next stop, we made our way to the hotel we would be staying which is located at Fisherman’s Wharf. Fisherman’s Wharf is a must-visit attraction in San Francisco. This place features its unique bay view of San Fransico and city history.

On that day, we also embarked on a boat ride from the pier, which offered a more intimate and private experience to explore the scenic beauty of the sea. These private-owned boat rides are typically priced per person, and the one I ride costs $20 per ticket. The route took us from Fisherman’s Wharf, around the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, before returning to the wharf, with the entire journey lasting approximately one hour.

As we passed beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, we found ourselves among the fortunate few who could appreciate the intricate details of the bridge’s structure from such a unique vantage point.

Finally, in the sunset, we walked to Pier 39, in particular, is a hub of wildlife, known for its large population of wild sea lions, drawing crowds of eager tourists daily.

Pier 39 also has many restaurants specializing in various seafood delights. One notable dish commonly enjoyed here is the ‘Clam Chowder in Bread’ which is generously filled with piping hot seafood chowder.
